At independence in 1964, Zambia was one of the richest
African countries, Now its one of the poorest due to drought, debt, the legacies of colonialism, and mis-management. Nearly one in five people is estimated to be HIV positive - frightening statistics for a population of only 10 million. Half of Zambia's population is under 20 years of age and deaths from AIDS are leaving a severe skills shortage in medical, education and technical fields.
HOPEHIV has been working in Zambia since 2001, pioneering rural entreprenuerial projects for vulnerable youth with the Chikombola Youth Project. We have also rolled kids clubs out across Zambia, training hundreds of local volunteers to establish weekly activities for orphans in their own communities.
