HOPEHIV has funded work in Kenya since 2002. It's home to over 1 million orphans and an estimated 23% of its people are living with HIV/AIDS. Kenya is a country of contrasts with its natural beauty and wildlife attracting tourists from all corners of the globe. However, half the population live below the poverty line and the slums of Kibera in Nairobi are home to nearly a million people crammed into tiny crumbling dwellings surrounded by uncollected rubbish and raw sewage.
HOPEHIV supports innovative work with street children in Nairobi as well as a small nursery school in Kibera slums. In the semi-arid isolated north we have built a community centre supporting orphans of the Samburu tribe with medical support and training in vocational skills. In Ligodho district we have built and electrified a community primary school. In partnership with the Salvation Army, we have also set up community kids clubs and adventure camps across all Kenya, equipping young people to become part of the solution for their communities
