Alfred is 43 years old and married with 3 children. Touched the by the orphan crisis in Malawi, Alfred adopted 6 orphans into his own home. In 2000 he founded Malawi Consol Homes Orphan Care in Lilongwe with 63 orphans and one day-care centre. Six years later, the project serves 14,500 orphans with 72 day-care centres and 350 volunteers across 250 villages. It was the first project in Malawi to provide emotional support for orphans and is endorsed by UNICEF as a best-practice model. We asked Alfred what inspired him:
"In 1999 I attended the funeral of a woman who had died of AIDS and saw her little girl aged 6 standing there at the grave, crying. It broke my heart and in that moment I decided to dedicate my life to helping orphans overcome that pain."
This year HOPEHIV wants to expand its emotional and social support programmes in Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, Swaziland and South Africa to help thousands of orphans overcome their grief.
£12 a month will train another local volunteer to set up new Kids' Clubs. DONATE NOW.
