Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world as it lacks the exportable minerals found in many other African nations and is heavily dependent on agriculture. Yet geographically it is an incredibly beautiful country. It has faced far less corruption and political strife than many of its neighbours yet struggles daily with water and electricity shortages. Tanzania is home to over 1 million orphans. Although effective prevention messages have now led to significantly reduced rates of infection, these many orphaned children are still in need of support.
HOPEHIV began working in Tanzania in 2003 in both rural and urban setttings. We have an emphasis on community empowerment, equipping older orphans themselves as well as guardians of younger orphans to learn job skills and generate an income. Innovative schemes like our Rural Community Empowerment Programme build on kids' clubs to come up with interesting and positive ways to tackle the orphan crisis in a sustainable way.
