LIGODHO PRIMARY SCHOOL

Lighodo Primary School

Ben grew up in Ligodho village in the poorest province of Kenya. He only got an education thanks to a tiny mud-hut school, built and managed by members of the village, because there was no government school nearby. He struggled through the challenges of no transport, no running water and no electricity. At just 30,he's now completed a Masters in Rhino Studies in the UK and heads up the Kenya Wildlife Service Rhino conservation program. But he never forgot his roots and his determination to transform his old primary school led him into partnership with HOPEHIV. Two years later, the mud huts have been replaced with 13 new brick classrooms, toilets,a water borehole and a government partnership to electrify the school that teaches 500 children orphaned or affected by AIDS.

HOPEHIV chose to partner with Ben as an example of a young man who wanted to improve the lives of children in his community. Ligodho School is now a beacon of light in the community receiving high praise from the district education department. Funds raised by Ben's inspiring story have also leveraged government commitment that has transformed the possibilities for this little village that was overlooked for so long. Thanks to Ben's drive and the determination of the Ligodho community, hundreds of other children will now have opportunities to follow in Ben's footsteps.
